About Ginger

I’d like to share a bit of my story with you and how I came to open my clinical practice, Shifting Current, LLC…

Developing authentic relationships with others has brought me joy for as long as I can remember. My passion for collective healing and liberation has always been a driving force in my life. I could begin to see a career path forward following four transformative years in college spent volunteering with a local rape crisis center supporting victims of sexual and domestic violence across the lifespan in hospital emergency rooms and on a crisis hotline.

After graduation, I began working in direct practice providing intensive support services as part of a community workforce development program in Chicago. My work there informed the trajectory of my career as I wanted to develop a deeper understanding of the simultaneous systems we interact with and their ongoing impacts on overall health and wellbeing. I gained experience in care coordination, Medicaid complex program and policy administration, multidisciplinary team development and facilitation, and the inner workings of healthcare systems.

I have always been drawn to the stories of people’s lives and long desired to be a mental health practitioner. Four years after college, I pursued my Master of Social Work (MSW) degree part-time to learn to be a clinician while continuing to work at the macro level, strengthening my ability to see individual experiences within the greater context of societal structures. During my schooling, I received extensive training in delivering therapeutic services with a community-based mental health agency working with survivors of sexual violence as well as with a private group practice specializing in LGBTQ+ affirmative care.

I moved to Madison in 2014 and have worked at state and local levels leading health equity program and policy initiatives, overseeing medical social work, interpreter services, and community care programming, and facilitating diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism learnings and organizational change management efforts.

My broad ranging professional, educational, and volunteer experiences over the past twenty years along with my own lived experiences as a genderqueer lesbian woman, partner, and parent bring critical insights, depth, and nuanced understandings to my clinical work in a therapeutic context.

“This moving away from comfort and security, this stepping out into what is unknown, uncharted and shaky – that’s called liberation.”
